The year of the Snake is coming to an end. Last year I wrote that you were supposed to pay attention to detail, be focused and disciplined to accomplish your goals and watch spending. How did you do in the Year of the Snake?

The slow and steady pace of the Snake is being trampled by the fast-paced and risk taking nature of the Horse. The Year of the Horse is expected to be a year of high energy, self-improvement and unexpected adventure. For those born in the year of the Horse (1966 and 1978), you are naturally lucky with money and career. So, what will the Year of the Horse and 2014 mean for finance and money?

Here is some advice based on Chinese interpretations of the year to come:

  1. Act Fast. Decisive action, not procrastination, brings victory. However, if you are not 100% secure in your decision, do not do it. You do not want to gallop in the wrong direction. Horses are very good at denial, so do not ignore the details if you want to avoid financial catastrophe.
  2. Keep the temptation to overspend in check. Horses are very social creatures, and you may be tempted to overspend on entertainment, going out and other fun adventures. You do not want to go broke trying to keep up with the “Live Today” good spirit of the Horse.
  3. Watch others and learn. The Year of the Horse is all about triumph or tragedy. There will be a lot of business failures this year. You do not have to act on your own. Instead, follow in others’ successful footsteps, but do it quickly. It may make more sense to follow the herd this year.
  4. Prepare for a busy schedule in 2014. The Horse likes to travel and lead a fast paced life.  To keep up with this pace, stay organized and prioritize what matters most to you.

Say goodbye to a year of focus and solitude, and welcome chaos and impulsiveness in the Year of the Horse. To make the most of the year, improve yourself and take decisive action. Extremes in the stock market, fluctuations in price and general chaos of all things financial are expected for 2014. While some economies will be very strong, others will face collapse. This may be an all or nothing year, so be prepared!
